Besides exercise, what is the best approach to build muscle?

I'm trying to build muscle in my upper body. i.e. triceps, biceps, and shoulders.Besides exercise, what is the best approach to build muscle?
drink lots of protein along with a on the edge diet and limit your fleshy consumption. and weight-lifting obviously.
lifting weights is the best opening to build muscle.
take a multivitamin and devour protein...
Swimming, your actually exercising and you may not even know it.
